4 Days Nyika and Vwaza Marsh

This Safari leaves from Nkhata Bay or Mzuzu on arrangement any day. We recommend that you book in advance. This tour takes you to the two excellent nature reserves of Malawi's northern region with Nyika National Park as the jewel in its crown. In contrast to Nyika's unique mountain plateau, the Vwaza Marsh Game Reserve is set in typical African savannah and, of course, you also get to spend some time by the most beautiful of Africa's Rift Valley lakes--Lake Malawi. There is no second park like the Nyika Plateau on the continent. Its landscape is unique. This safari comes either as a chalet or camping tour.

DAY 1

  • We leave either Nkhata Bay or Mzuzu and head for the little-known Vwaza Marsh Game Reserve, an excellent wildlife refuge famous for its plentiful herds of elephants and numerous basking hippos. Other commonly seen mammals include kudu; puku; impala; warthog; vervet monkey and yellow baboon. Buffalo; roan antelope; Sharpe's Grysbok; Lesser and Greater bushbabies; African civet and Large-spotted genet are also found in the park. The afternoon game drive takes you through typical African savannah landscape along the sunny shore of Lake Kazuni, where we spend a restful night at the Kazuni Lodge in en suite safari-style chalet overlooking the picturesque lake. Dinner is taken in the beautifully situated dining area where curious elephants often pass on their way to drink from the lake.

DAY 2

  • After an optional morning game walk escorted by an armed ranger we then leave for fabulous Nyika National Park. This unique mountain plateau offers a type of scenery unsurpassed in Africa and is also home to a number of rare animal species such as the side-striped jackal, the reedbuck, the red and the forest duiker, the klipspringer and both roan and eland antelopes. Leopard and serval cat are best seen on one of our popular night drives (for the price of this optional night drive, see below). Burchell's zebra is commonly seen. Other species include wartog, bush pig, baboon, vervet and blue monkey as well as a number of nocturnal species. The afternoon is spent on a game drive through the rolling grassland of the extensive plateau. Your accommodation at Chelinda Camp is in a rustic self-contained chalet with a spacious sitting room and large open fire place.

DAY 3

  • In the morning we go on a relaxing lakeside walk where plentiful game can be spotted and in the afternoon you can head out on another game drive with us, or just chill out at the lodge with cool drink and admire the timeless beauty of the landscape.

DAY 4

  • After breakfast we make our way back to Nkhata Bay (or Mzuzu). On the way your guide takes you for a short walk in one of the patches of Evergreen Forest that are spread all over the plateau.
