7 Days Southern Malawi

South tour ,south Luangwa National Park (zambia), Liwonde, 2 days Zomba Plateau, Mulanje Mountain, Majete Game Reserve, Lengwe National Park, Lilongwe

This is one of our most famous safaris. It takes you to all the highlights of the Southern part of the country. An advantage are the short distances between the places. This allows you to spend more time at each place and enjoy the attractions. From the third day this safari is the same as the safari “9 Days Southern Malawi”, but offers 2 days in Senga Bay at the lake in addition.

DAY 1

  • The journey from Lilongwe to Liwonde National Park should take about 4 hours. This is the park in Malawi that offers the best game watching opportunities. Commonly seen game here include Elephant; Hippo; Buffalo; Kudu; Impala; Waterbuck; Bushbuck; Common Duiker; Velvet Monkey; Baboon; Bush pig and Warthog.
  • Also Lion; Zebra; Eland; Roan; Reedbuck; Liechtenstein’s Hartebeest; Jackal; several types of Mongoose and Porcupine occur in the park. The most famous mammal to be seen, probably, is the shy Sable Antelope which is not uncommon.
  • There are some 8 Rhinos in a special sanctuary within the park, but chances to see them are rather limited. But you could still give it a try on one the game drives. Bird life is amazing. Specials include White-backed Night Heron, African Skimmer and Lillian’s Lovebird, while Pel’s Fishing Owl is a real challenge and requires some good luck. The total number of recorded birds for this park exceeds 400 species.
  • In the afternoon you go on a combined day/night game drive in one of the lodge’s open safari vehicles. The comfortable safari chalets are situated at the banks of the Shire River, allowing scenic views over this typical African landscape.

DAY 2

  • After breakfast you go on the boat safari on the Shire River, a highlight of a holiday in Malawi. You see the various land mammals from the boat and the countless number of hippos and crocodiles in the water. The shore is frequented by a large number of birds. If lucky, you see elephants coming to the river to drink or even take a bath. After lunch, there is time to relax at the pool, then afternoon tea is served, followed by another day/night game drive that could take you into the Rhino Sanctuary.

DAY 3

  • You decide, if you like to start the morning with a 6.00 am morning walk, escorted by an armed guide or you go for another boat ride on the river. Then you leave the camp towards the Zomba Plateau. At an altitude of up to 2,000 meters, the plateau is dominated by grassland, indigenous evergreen forests and exotic pine forests. This vast area of pure nature with numerous treks alongside streams, dambos and waterfalls invites for a walk of any length that is convenient to you. If you do not feel like hiking, we will take you by car to some of the several view points over the surrounding lowland area.

DAY 4

  • The “Island in the Sky”, the Mulanje Massif, is one of the country’s major attractions. From a distance you can see this impressive mountain massif emerging into the sky, imbedded in the fresh green of vast tea plantations. Spend the afternoon relaxing on the veranda of the luxurious colonial style bungalow with the mountain on the one hand side and tea fields on the other or go for a walk in the forest.
  • If you wish to climb the massif this is also possible. There are some simple cabins on the plateau that offer accommodation for the night. Guides and porters are available at any time. To climb the plateau makes it necessary to extend the safari by at least one day. If you like to do so, please contact us before you book.

DAY 5

  • From the Mulanje Massif we descend to Malawi’s lowest area and pay a visit to the Majete Game Reserve. You will not find much about this park in any travel guide. It has recently benefited from a development project that includes the re-introduction of game and the control of poaching as well as the construction of a comfortable lodge. A lot of effort has been done and the result is impressive. This park now is definitely worth visiting. Game viewing is excellent and the range of mammal species is as good, if not better than in any other park in Malawi.
  • On Saturday, 25 August 2012 three Majete lions, brought in from South Africa, were released successfully. On your game drive there is plenty of game to be seen along the Shire River and in the typical African tree savannah: Elephant; Hippo; Buffalo; Zebra; Sable, Nyala and Eland Antelopes; Reedbuck; Waterbuck; Common Duiker; Liechtenstein’s Hartebeest; Warthog and Dwarf Mongoose occur in the park. In November 2007 some 6 Rhinos have been introduced to the park. Accommodation and meals are excellent. Since the way from Mulanje is not far, there is plenty of time for game drives.

DAY 6

  • The next day takes you to the nearby but quite different Lengwe National Park. Game here includes the largest population of the beautiful Nyala Antelope in the country. Kudu; Impala; Bushbuck; Buffalo; Warthog; Baboon; Velvet Monkey and the otherwise rarely seen Blue Monkey should be seen on the afternoon game drive. The meals from the lodge are excellent, so are the chalets.

DAY 7

  • A special of Lengwe National Park are the hides next to the waterholes where you sit and watch the animals that come to the waterhole and drink. After breakfast we take you to Lilongwe, where the tour ends at a place of your choice within town.
